Summary

Peace is just another kind of battlefield 。 。 。

Savine dan Glokta, once Adua's most powerful investor, finds her judgement, fortune and reputation in tatters。 But she still has all her ambitions, and no scruple will be permitted to stand in her way。

For heroes like Leo dan Brock and Stour Nightfall, only happy with swords drawn, peace is an ordeal to end as soon as possible。 But grievances must be nursed, power seized, and allies gathered first, while Rikke must master the power of the Long Eye 。 。 。 before it kills her。

Unrest worms into every layer of society。 The Breakers still lurk in the shadows, plotting to free the common man from his shackles, while noblemen bicker for their own advantage。 Orso struggles to find a safe path through the maze of knives that is politics, only for his enemies, and his debts, to multiply。

The old ways are swept aside, and the old leaders with them, but those who would seize the reins of power will find no alliance, no friendship, and no peace lasts forever。

The higher you climb, the further you have to fall, and the greater the spectacle when you hit the ground。 The Age of Madness is Joe’s best work and I can’t wait to see how he sticks the landing。 Liked this just slightly less than A Little Hatred but the characterizations, politics, and general twists, treachery, and revelations were all top notch。 It’s bloody good fun while also having a surprising amount of depth and layers。 Bring on The Wisdom of Crowds!

“Some say that to change the world you must first burn it down”“The Trouble with Peace” by Joe Abercrombie is the second book in his Age of Madness trilogy, and after reading this one Age of Madness is the perfect name。 We continue our story almost right where we left off in “A Little Hatred”。 I don’t want to get into to many spoilers, so we will leave this section brief。 Political stances and climate have changed。 The nation is unstable and change lurks around the corner。 War and Betrayal are e “Some say that to change the world you must first burn it down”“The Trouble with Peace” by Joe Abercrombie is the second book in his Age of Madness trilogy, and after reading this one Age of Madness is the perfect name。 We continue our story almost right where we left off in “A Little Hatred”。 I don’t want to get into to many spoilers, so we will leave this section brief。 Political stances and climate have changed。 The nation is unstable and change lurks around the corner。 War and Betrayal are ever present。 As we move forward seems like nothing is certain or sacred。 Revolution has begun。 First think I want to say is, HOLY HELL! This book went hard。 Especially the end。 I thought we were slowly ramping it up。 Then he hits us with the “You think your at 10? Sucker your still at 1! Here is the 10!” And then proceeds to crank it up so fast I had to stop reading and sit with my jaw open。 This book did it all。 Political strife done so well that you can’t help but keep turning the page。 Action sequences that felt like you were there。 Just brilliant! The chapter “Late” may be one of my favorite chapters I have read。 Almost up there with “The Bloody Nine” and they couldn’t be more different。 Where as “The Bloody Nine” had me screaming Hell Ya! “Late” had me actually quiet and thinking I may cry。 Abercrombie delivers once again。 Second thing I have to mention is characters。 Wouldn’t be a First Law review without some character talk。 I love our cast。 Some more than others, but all are still great。 I don’t want to say to much on who is around and what they are doing, but Abercrombie’s signature A+ character work still shines and will leave no one disappointed。 “The Trouble with Peace” was another brilliant entry in the First Law world。 I can’t wait to see how he concludes this story。 I feel so much has to happen, and I feel so much is going to go wrong。 If he sticks this landing, this may be one of the best fantasy trilogies ever written。 。。。more

Finished this yesterday - one of those rare reads where I plopped down, read it straight through, and didn't take any breaks except for food and sleep。 While reading I literally thought to myself "I wish I could read new Joe Abercrombie novels every day for the rest of my life!" What a happy life that would be。 Needless to say, I really enjoyed this, and I'm dying for the conclusion to be released in about 12 hours。 Finished this yesterday - one of those rare reads where I plopped down, read it straight through, and didn't take any breaks except for food and sleep。 While reading I literally thought to myself "I wish I could read new Joe Abercrombie novels every day for the rest of my life!" Fantastic in every way。 Brutal, funny, thoughtful and thoroughly addictive。 Abercrombie creates such smooth, never dull, easy to read novels。 This one builds upon and ultimately is better than the first, probably due to the stakes being higher。I am constantly amazed by how real, vibrant and visceral Abercrombie's world is。 It has depth not found in most fictitious realms。 The characters are likewise fantastically realized - always realistic, multidimensional and flat out interesting。 Again, in o Fantastic in every way。 Brutal, funny, thoughtful and thoroughly addictive。 Abercrombie creates such smooth, never dull, easy to read novels。 This one builds upon and ultimately is better than the first, probably due to the stakes being higher。I am constantly amazed by how real, vibrant and visceral Abercrombie's world is。 It has depth not found in most fictitious realms。 The characters are likewise fantastically realized - always realistic, multidimensional and flat out interesting。 Again, in other fiction I often find myself less interested or invested in some characters, but usually with Abercrombie, and this one in particular, I enjoy all characters POV's。 One thing that no doubt will surprise many people aware of how dark and adult Abercrombie can be is how successfully he incorporates humor。 I had several LOL moments reading this, what skill。 Bring on The Wisdom of Crowds!!! 。。。more

"In times of peace, the warlike man attacks himself。"By the dead! Just when I think Joe Abercrombie couldn't get any better, he hits me with "The Trouble with Peace" and completely outdoes himself。 After picking up his first novel, The Blade Itself, earlier in the year I went on a massive First Law rampage and have now read all ten of his books in the series。 I've been blown away by pretty much all of them and thought I'd established my favourites。 However, this one throws a serious spanner "In times of peace, the warlike man attacks himself。"By the dead! Just when I think Joe Abercrombie couldn't get any better, he hits me with "The Trouble with Peace" and completely outdoes himself。 After picking up his first novel, The Blade Itself, earlier in the year I went on a massive First Law rampage and have now read all ten of his books in the series。 I've been blown away by pretty much all of them and thought I'd established my favourites。 However, this one throws a serious spanner in the work as its definitely one of his best。 Intense, engaging and with a subtle edge, this in no way suffered from second book syndrome。 Abercrombie provides one hell of a story and expands on the opening book in the Age of Madness trilogy (A Little Hatred), to set up a fantastic finale in the upcoming final book。If you're a Joe Abercrombie fan you know exactly what to expect。 There's violence, betrayal and lots of fantastic dark humour。 And if you're not a fan yet, then you shouldn't even be reading this review。 You need to click on that First Law link above and start right at the beginning of the series with The Blade Itself。 In my honest opinion you need to read the full set in order to get anywhere near the most out of this book。 That's starting with the original First Law Trilogy。 Then you can come back and leave me a little thank you when you're finished! The plot in this one is very heavy on the political intrigue, which I hugely enjoyed。 The seeds were sown in the first book, where an increasingly industrialised society was becoming evermore fractious as the poor suffered at the hands of the elite。 Well, in The Trouble with Peace things really start to gather momentum, as key figures align themselves and gather forces and outright war seems the only conclusion。 The author uses his trademark of multiple POVs to expertly navigate the opposing sides and put the reader on a knife edge as we struggle to decide who to root for and never truly know how this one is going to work out。 "Say what you like。 I never had a problem I couldn't solve with a big enough blade。"The writing is immense。 Abercrombie's an absolute master of character driven narratives and just hits that sweet spot of description, where you're completely immersed in the story and never distracted。 A massive aid to this is his amazing grasp of dialogue that is absolutely on the money。 It's snarky, hilarious and so natural that you're completely drawn in by it and he tweaks it depending on the individual character, where you know exactly who's talking without having to be explicitly told。 I can't think of anyone, who does this better than him。One of my favourite things that the author does, is the battle scenes where he switches POVs rapidly, every two or three pages, to illustrate how frantic and unpredictable it is。 It's one of his trademarks and if you're a fellow fan you'll know exactly what I'm talking about。 So good! And while we're on the subject of battles, nobody gets the gritty level of violence and fear like the Lord of Grimdark does。 Sorry John Gwynne, not even close for my money。Right, I really could prattle on all day but this is a First Law review so you know I can't sign off without talking about the characters。 In my review of A Little Hatred, I praised the quality of writing but did say the characters weren't quite as good as those in the original trilogy。 Well, Mr Grimdark addresses this issue like only he can by ramping up the character development as we see significant growth in each of the main characters。 Star of the show for my money is King Orso, who was something of a self-deprecating libertine in the first book。 He starts to show his resolve and intelligence as he plays the political game expertly while injecting a good amount of humour in the process。 Rikke, the Dogman's daughter up north, has a total character transformation that is very well executed and with fantastic results。 Even Savine dan Glokta grew on me a huge amount and we see a vulnerable side to her, as she deals with the traumatic events of the first novel。 Honestly, whichever point of view is in play you're going to have great fun。 "I must confess I have always had some sympathy for villains。 Heroism makes fine entertainment but sooner or later someone has to get things done。"Ok, I'm running out of breath like I'm scrapping for my life within the circle。 If you read A Little Hatred and enjoyed it then this is a must read。 And if you're a fan of First Law but haven't started the Age of Madness trilogy then what's wrong with you? Seriously? Get on it right now before the new book the Wisdom of Crowds is out 18th of September 2021 from all good bookstores。Joe Abercrombie 。。。more

Joe Abercrombie may be the best current author。He so effectively blends humour, bleakness, astonishing character work and brutal violence into this perfect storm。 This is probably my favourite First Law book yet。The plot, which is absent in a few of his books, his fast paced and tightly plotted。 As in the first entry of the Age Of Madness, the plot takes quite a few shocking twists and turns, and this time, it’s the POV characters that shock you!I barely even need to talk about the character wor Joe Abercrombie may be the best current author。He so effectively blends humour, bleakness, astonishing character work and brutal violence into this perfect storm。 This is probably my favourite First Law book yet。The plot, which is absent in a few of his books, his fast paced and tightly plotted。 As in the first entry of the Age Of Madness, the plot takes quite a few shocking twists and turns, and this time, it’s the POV characters that shock you!I barely even need to talk about the character work, because everyone else has already said it。 Brilliant, amazing, awesome, etc, etc, etc。I particularly enjoyed the way Abercrombie brings in characters from previous books for short cameos without ever making it feel like fan service。The fight scenes are brutal and written so that you can always follow what’s going on, no matter how many POV jumps or deaths or twists there are。All in all, fantastic。 。。。more

He's really got command of his world and characters。 Will this books in this world be ending after the next one? I imagine he could write at least several more。 I'm still shocked there were time jumps over the series。 I miss some of the characters previously focused upon, and I think there's people and regions mentioned we're never going to see。 I think it was a good choice to show the political/economic situation of The Union evolving。 I finished this at a great time - the next book will be out He's really got command of his world and characters。 Will this books in this world be ending after the next one? It’s rare that a fantasy series ages – the characters you grew to love or hate in the earlier books age, their children grow up to become the new hero or villain, and the story progresses and changes, while remaining just as entertaining and exciting as when your first started reading the series。 Mr Abercrombie has done just that and I am so grateful。 Really looking forward to the third book, because how could anything get worse for the characters than how things ended in this book?

This book was everything I've come to expect from an Abercrombie trilogy rolled into one book。 There were twists and betrayals enough to keep you reeling, heavily fleshed out characters you can't help but root for, and even a crunching battle scene that drops you right in the middle of the blood and the shit。Like every Abercrombie entry so far, the greatest strength of this book was the character work。 But, more so than any of his books so far, you just can't seem to choose which of the two prim This book was everything I've come to expect from an Abercrombie trilogy rolled into one book。 There were twists and betrayals enough to keep you reeling, heavily fleshed out characters you can't help but root for, and even a crunching battle scene that drops you right in the middle of the blood and the shit。Like every Abercrombie entry so far, the greatest strength of this book was the character work。 But, more so than any of his books so far, you just can't seem to choose which of the two primary antagonistic characters to side with, the weight of the world on both sides。 In the hands of any other author, either could have been an epic hero and the other a villain worthy of fear。 But it's Abercrombie, so both sides are equally sympathetic and equally repulsive。It seems, with every entry into The First Law, Abercrombie gets a tighter grip on his plots and narratives, and this book is an exponential jump in the right direction。 There seemed to be no page wasted, and yet every concept was explored thoroughly and unpacked with great care。Waiting with excitement for the next entry。 。。。more

I read everything Joe Abercrombie writes without reservation or prejudice - he's brilliant。 For some odd reason, I thought this one, in its early stages, might not be up to his usual standard。 Silly boy。 If you start it and feel the same - persevere with the first couple of chapters which are setting things up - it's got everything and more you've come to expect from him。 Fantastic !
